What is Between Meals?

Between Meals is written by Max Brearley. Or, me! I’m a food and rink writer and editor based in the Margaret River region in South West Australia.

I’ve been writing about food, drink and travel for over a decade in the UK (where I’m originally from) and Australia (which is now home). I've cast a critical eye over restaurants across Australia and the UK for delicious. (as their WA critic), The Weekend Australian Magazine’s Hot 50 Restaurants, Good Food Guide (national), WA Good Food Guide (of which I’m the editor), The West Australian, Time Out and View London.

Between Meals is a chance for me to share the story behind the stories, to dive deeper than word counts and editorial budgets often allow, and take tangents that are the food equivalent of what some would (and have) term “a bit inside baseball“. It’s what I’m thinking about, things I’ve seen, heard, and read. And yes sometimes the meals themselves.

While I love to write for a regular roster mastheads there’s a great sense of freedom in writing Between Meals, whether it’s a short piece on a dish, an ingredient, a dining experience; a long-read interview; or simply what I’ve been listening to or watching. I hope as a regular reader you’ll enjoy coming along for the ride as Between Meals develops.
